Hulu announced that it is now offering 4K UHD content, that will initially be available on Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. Early on, Hulu is limiting access to its 4K fare on the Xbox One S and PlayStation 4. It’ll expand 4K support to more devices in 2017. Possible candidates include 4K-capable Roku players, Amazon Fire TV boxes and Google’s new Chromecast streaming adapter.

Hulu requires a minimum internet connection of 13 megabits per second to stream 4K content to a display capable of supporting 3840 by 2160 resolution. With the move, Hulu is playing catch-up to its two biggest rivals, Amazon and Netflix, which have offered a selection of titles in 4K for several years. Amazon and Netflix also offer some programming in high dynamic range format, which provides greater color depth and sharper contrasts.

Hulu’s first batch of 4K includes the company’s lineup original shows and 20 James Bond films. So while that is pretty good news for 007 fanatics, well, it doesn’t do much for everyone else. Hulu Originals (11.22.63, Chance, The Path, etc.) are not exactly the same award-winning critical darlings we have seen from the service’s competitors. Hopefully the company will waste no time in widening its catalog of things to watch in 4K. It is also lagging behind Vudu, Amazon, and now Netflix in enabling offline downloads.

List Of Bond flicks:

  • Spectre
  • Die Another Day
  • The World Is Not Enough
  • GoldenEye
  • Licence To Kill
  • The Living Daylights
  • A View To A Kill
  • Never Say Never Again
  • Octopussy
  • Moonraker
  • For Your Eyes Only
  • The Spy Who Loved Me
  • The Man With The Golden Gun
  • Diamonds Are Forever
  • On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
  • You Only Live Twice
  • Thunderball
  • Goldfinger
  • From Russia With Love
  • Dr. No

It is a not a huge library compared to 4K offerings from Amazon and Netflix. Plus, both those services have offered UHD for a while now. In simple words, Hulu has a lot of catching up to do and no amount of super-spy gadgets is going to change that.
